The Life Skills Check

The companion to the Daily Living Skills Check, covering the tasks that keep a household running rather than the ones that keep a person going.

This page explains how it works. The tool itself is inside your SeniorThrive account.

The Life Skills Check asks about running your life rather than looking after your body: managing money, handling the telephone, shopping, getting places, keeping on top of medicines and housework.

It is the companion to the Daily Living Skills Check. That one is about you. This one is about everything around you.

Where to find it

Open My Health and choose the Life Skills Check card.

Why the two are separate

They tend to change at different times, and the order tells you something.

The tasks in this check are usually the ones that get harder first, because they ask more of memory, planning and judgement. Someone can be washing and dressing without a second thought while the bills have quietly become difficult. That is common, it is not a failing, and it is exactly the sort of thing worth noticing early rather than late.

What it is

Like its companion, its questions follow the domains of a published clinical framework, the Lawton IADL Scale, named at the bottom of your results. You can see what the questions are built on and take that name to your doctor.

The answer scale is SeniorThrive's own. The published version scores each item yes or no; ours is graded, so you can show where help would be useful rather than only whether you manage. Your results say so, and it is worth telling a professional when you show them.

What it is not

It does not diagnose anything, and it does not decide that you need help. It records your own answers about your own week.

A change over time is worth raising with a professional. What that change means is theirs to judge.

Answering

One question at a time. Tap an answer and the next question comes up on its own. No timer.

Answer for how things genuinely are now. The most useful answers are the honest ones, including on the questions you would rather skip. Nobody is marking this, and an answer you fudge is one you cannot use later.

Your results

A summary of what you reported, with the framework named underneath.

The single most useful thing you can do with it is run it again in a few months. One result is a snapshot. Two results, months apart, are a trend, and a trend is something you and a doctor can actually talk about.

Who sees it

Only you, and whoever in your Circle you have chosen to share your health with. That is set under Settings, in the Privacy & Sharing tab, and you can change it whenever you like.

If something in it worries you

Take it to your doctor, and take the framework name with it. If the trouble is practical rather than medical, some of it has an ordinary fix: a standing order for the bills, a delivery for the shopping, a pill organiser. Difficulty with a task is not the same as losing the ability to live your life.
