Do I need a credit card to start?

No. The 14-day trial does not ask for one, and the Free plan never does. You enter a card only when you decide to pay.

No. You can start the 14-day trial without entering a card, and nothing is charged until you choose to pay.

The Free plan never asks for one at all.

Why we do it this way

Because a card on file that starts charging when a trial quietly runs out is a trick, and it is a particularly bad trick to play on a family in the middle of working out whether a parent needs help.

If you forget about us for a fortnight, nothing happens. There is no charge waiting at the end of it.

What happens when the trial ends

Your account moves to the Free plan, which never expires. Nothing is deleted. You are not charged, and you are not locked out.

If you want the paid features later, you upgrade then. Everything you recorded in the meantime is still there.

When a card does come into it

Only when you decide to subscribe to Essential, or add a seat for someone. At that point you will see the exact monthly total before you confirm anything.

One person holds the card for a Circle, usually whoever set it up. Nobody else in the family is asked for payment details.
