Playing Target Search

Target Search trains visual scanning. Find every instance of a colored shape in a grid. Medium difficulty, 4-8 minutes. Part of Essential.

Written by Brian Fluhr

Target Search is a visual scanning game. You are shown a specific shape in a specific color (say, a red triangle). Then you see a grid full of shapes in different colors. Your job is to tap every red triangle, and only red triangles.

It sounds simple, and it is, until the grid gets bigger and the decoys get trickier.

Where to find it

Go to ActivitiesBrain Games, and tap Target Search.

How to play

  1. Tap Play.

  2. The game shows you a target: a specific shape in a specific color.

  3. A grid appears, full of shapes. Some match the target. Most do not.

  4. Tap every shape that matches the target, exactly.

  5. When you have found them all, the round ends and you see how you did.

Where it gets tricky

The decoys are close to the target. If the target is a red triangle, the grid might have blue triangles (right shape, wrong color), red circles (right color, wrong shape), and orange triangles (close to red, but not quite).

The trick is to hold both attributes (shape AND color) firmly in mind, and not get lured by near-matches.

What it trains

  • Paying attention. Especially to more than one thing at once (shape plus color).

  • Searching carefully. Not getting in a hurry and missing a match.

  • Quick thinking. Some rounds include a gentle time limit. You can ignore it if you prefer no pressure.

How long a round takes

Four to eight minutes. Several short rounds are more useful than one marathon. Most people play two or three rounds and stop.

A few small tips

  • Scan in a pattern. Left to right, top to bottom, like reading a page. Random scanning misses things.

  • Do not be afraid to take a second pass. After you think you are done, look again. Surprisingly often, one more target appears.

  • If the colors are hard to tell apart, check your device settings. Brighter display and higher contrast help.

It counts

Every completed round contributes to your ThriveScore. Target Search is one of the games that also translates to real life: better visual scanning makes reading a grocery store shelf easier, and driving safer.
