Home Services: finding a trusted pro when you need one

When a Room Check turns up something that needs a handyman, a plumber, or an installer, SeniorThrive helps you find a local pro without leaving the app.

Some home safety fixes you can do yourself. A rug that needs flattening. A bulb that needs changing. A drawer that needs re-organizing.

Some fixes need a pro. A grab bar that needs installing properly. A raised toilet seat. A stair railing that has to support real weight. Home Services is the place to find the right person for those jobs, without leaving SeniorThrive.

Where to find it

Go to My HomeHome Services from the side menu. You can also open it directly from a Room Check finding, when SeniorThrive suggests hiring help for a specific task.

How it works

  1. Tell SeniorThrive what you need done. "Install a grab bar near the tub." "Tighten the loose stair railing." "Add better lighting in the hallway."

  2. Enter your zip code, so we can show pros in your area.

  3. You will see a list of local professionals who do that kind of work. Each one has their ratings, reviews, and an estimated price range for your job.

  4. Tap a pro to read more, or tap Request a quote to have them get in touch.

What to expect from a pro

  • A response within a day or two. Most will email or call.

  • A written estimate before any work begins. Never agree to a job without one.

  • A fair price. If a quote feels very high or very low, get a second quote.

  • A clean work site when they are done.

Letting a family member help

If you want a family member to handle this, tap Share with my Circle on the job. A son or daughter in your circle will see the request and can coordinate the pro for you. Many families find this one of the nicest ways to help.

Avoiding home repair scams

Home repair is one of the areas where scams aimed at older adults are most common. A few rules that keep you safer:

  • Never hire someone who shows up unsolicited. A knock at the door saying "I noticed your roof is missing shingles" is almost always the beginning of a scam.

  • Get a written estimate before any work starts.

  • Never pay in full upfront. A small deposit is normal. A full payment is not.

  • Pay by check or credit card, not cash. Cash leaves no record.

  • If something feels wrong, stop and call a family member before signing anything.

If you are ever unsure about a contractor, put their information into Is This a Scam? under Daily Life. It is quick, and it is private.

A small fix done well is worth every dollar. A rushed fix, done cheap, rarely is.
