Find Local Help: finding a trusted pro when you need one

When a Room Check turns up something that needs a handyman, a plumber, or an installer, Find Local Help shows you rated pros near you, from inside SeniorThrive.

This page explains how it works. The tool itself is inside your SeniorThrive account.

Some home safety fixes you can do yourself. A rug that needs flattening. A bulb that needs changing. A drawer that needs re-organizing.

Some fixes need a pro. A grab bar that needs installing properly. A raised toilet seat. A stair railing that has to support real weight. Find Local Help is the place to find the right person for those jobs.

Where to find it

Go to My Home, then Find Local Help. You can also reach the same pros from a Home Safety To-Do: open the to-do, and the kind of help it needs is listed underneath it.

How it works

The page is a set of cards, one for each kind of help: Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Home Safety Specialists, Handyman Services, Plumbers, Electricians, Cleaning Services, Yard & Lawn Care, Smart Home & Locksmith, and Home Medical Equipment. Each card says in plain words what that kind of pro does and when they are worth calling.

  1. Pick the card that fits the job. For the trades, such as Handyman Services or Plumbers, tap Find on Thumbtack and a list of nearby pros opens right under the card.

  2. The list uses the zip code on your profile, so there is nothing to type. If your profile has no zip code yet, the list asks you to add one first.

  3. Each pro shows a star rating, how many reviews it is based on, and how quickly they usually respond. Some carry a Top Pro badge. Prices are not shown here; you get those from the pro.

  4. Tap a pro to open their Thumbtack page in a new tab, where you can read more and get in touch. That step leaves SeniorThrive. Quotes, booking and payment all happen with the pro, not in the app.

The cards for therapists and specialists link to directories and searches instead. Those ask you to confirm before you leave SeniorThrive.

What to expect from a pro

  • A response within a day or two. Most will email or call.

  • A written estimate before any work begins. Never agree to a job without one.

  • A fair price. If a quote feels very high or very low, get a second quote.

  • A clean work site when they are done.

Letting a family member help

If you would rather a family member make the calls, that is a good way to let them help. Look at the card together, or send them the name of the pro you liked, and let them take it from there.

Avoiding home repair scams

Home repair is one of the areas where scams aimed at older adults are most common. A few rules that keep you safer:

  • Never hire someone who shows up unsolicited. A knock at the door saying "I noticed your roof is missing shingles" is almost always the beginning of a scam.

  • Get a written estimate before any work starts.

  • Never pay in full upfront. A small deposit is normal. A full payment is not.

  • Pay by check or credit card, not cash. Cash leaves no record.

  • If something feels wrong, stop and call a family member before signing anything.

If you are ever unsure about a contractor, put their information into Is This a Scam? under Daily Life. It is quick, and it is private.

A small fix done well is worth every dollar. A rushed fix, done cheap, rarely is.
